The ‘Target Zero’ project is a free resource that will provide designers, architects and engineers with the guidance they need to meet the emissions reduction target set by government of zero carbon by 2019.
In May 2008 the Market Development Fund (MDF) commissioned a team led by AECOM (formerly Faber Maunsell) to carry out a £1 million sustainability project to look at five major building types:
School
Warehouse
Supermarket
Office
Mixed use
The project will generate fully-costed solutions demonstrating how to achieve steel intensive, low and zero carbon buildings with the three highest BREEAM ratings. The results of this work will appear as Guidance Reports, one for each building type.
Over the past 18 months significant progress has been made. The anticipated carbon reduction targets for non-domestic buildings, the methodology to achieve these targets (for the five different buildings types) and the routes to low and zero carbon, for both the School and the Warehouse are now established.
The first design guide on delivering low and zero carbon schools is now available and design guides for the other building types are expected at three monthly intervals throughout 2010.
