New Sustainable Supermarkets Guidance Published

Asda, Stockton on Tees

The third guide in the series, providing detailed guidance on sustainable low and zero carbon buildings, is the Target Zero report on supermarkets which is now published.

Commissioned by Tata Steel and the British Constructional Steelwork Association (BCSA), the report on supermarkets is the first of its kind to undertake a detailed comparison of different energy efficiency measures, low or zero carbon (LZC) technologies and Allowable Solutions in order to identify the most cost-effective means of achieving different levels of carbon reduction.

The base case building for the supermarket report is based on Asda’s food store at Stockton-on-Tees in Cleveland. The supermarket was completed in 2008 and provides 9,393m2 floor area, arranged over two levels. The supermarket is constructed with a steel frame.

The Target Zero methodology is to take a recently constructed building that is typical of current UK practice and use it to create a base case building that just meets the 2006 Part L requirements for operational carbon emissions. Operational carbon reductions reported are relative to the base case building performance.  The estimated cost of construction of the base case supermarket building is £1.682/m2.

Amongst the study’s key findings, the report finds that carefully integrated efficiency measures, giving a 35% reduction in regulated operational carbon emissions can be achieved without renewable energy technologies; and as with all the other reports efficient lighting and optimal rooflight design were key to achieving significant operational carbon reductions cost effectively.

The key findings from the report are available for download now.
