The Whole Story
The Whole Story: From Cradle to Grave was commissioned by Tata Steel and the BCSA and was produced and distributed in association with United Business Media. The supplement appeared with two of their titles – Building and Building Design (BD) on 18 November 2011, and was included with New Steel Construction magazine November/December 2011 issue. The publication also appeared with The Structural Engineer, January 2012 issue.
The publication was aimed at broadening the ongoing sustainability debate and to help engineers and designers to think about the longer-term implication of their choices. It highlighted the shortcomings of most current embodied carbon calculations and encouraged a more holistic approach. This meant an assessment of the full lifecycle of buildings and materials from cradle-to-grave, rather than a simplified cradle-to-gate method which only considered the carbon emissions to the factory gate and ignored the later burdens and benefits.
